La Hierbita Overview

Santa Cruz has been getting a name for itself recently as a top class city break. But you don't have to spend a few nights here to sample its delights. For a classy taste of traditional cuisine, try La Hierbita housed in an old Canarian mansion just on the edge of Santa Cruz' old quarter. This is where local politicians, artists and business owners dine to impress. It's a sure fire way to experience the best of Canarian cuisine in a novel way.

Eating at the mansion is like being invited to a private house party, especiallyif you can get a private room, or even better, your own terrace overlooking the pedestrians below. You'll have to make a reservation well in advance for this, but it's definitely worth the effort. If you're eating with a party of four or more, ask for 'una terraza con vista' and you can wave rabbit, pork and fish bones at the riff raff below.

If you've got the appetite try the Menu Degustacion, basically a chance for the chefs of La Hierbita to show you some of their best creations. Expect stewed bananas, Canarian potatoes (papas arrugadas), goat's cheese with coriander sauce, cheese dip, fresh fish and a home-made dessert. And more. Appetisers include fried goats cheese with coriander sauce and start at around €6. Main courses such as rabbit in spicy red pepper sauce start at €10.

  Went there three times in one week

  That's right, I ate at La Hierbita on a Wednesday, a Sunday, then again on the following Wednesday. I went with my girlfriend twice and a friend once. All dishes were exceptional, here's what you MUST order: Papas arrugadas- served hot with just the right amount of sea salt. Dip generously in their superb mojo sauces. Anything with banana (pl?tano)- when grilled, this ingredient adds the perfect sweet and savory punch.

  Great place

  Great place but try and get the balcony table overlooking the street. You'll need to book well in advance but its worth it. Its like having your own private party.
