There are plenty of Italian restaurants in Tenerife. Probably more than in the whole of Rome, so what would make you choose one over another? For me, a parent of two tiny terrorists, a waiting staff who tolerate the antics of toddlers with a boredom threshold bordering on zero and a distinct lack of ability to sit in one place for more than three seconds. And good food.
San Marco ticks both these boxes, and more. It's friendly, the service is smooth and the food is great - not exceptional - but great. An outside terace at the back provides a safe haven for the patter of tiny bored feet, far from traffic and far enough from the intimate bit of the restaurant. The tables are also spaced wide enough to not annoy your neighbours, nor have to listen to any unwanted bleating.
The pizzas are very good and very large - pretty much all you need from a pizza really. The Mussels Mariniere are also recommended as a starter or a main course. Several fish dishes appear on the menu, including Sole, which is good but I've had better. Mine was a bit heavy on the butter. A good benchmark for an Italian is the quality of their Spaghetti Bolognaise and San Marco definitely passes the test in this respect. Just the right amount of herbs and thick enough in consistency to prove it's a main course and not a watery soup.
All in all this is one of Tenerife's great unsung Italian heroes and a good choice for families with small children. If you go for lunch, bribe the kids with a trip to the great ballpark situated on the next floor up.
